NFPA Standards On Industrial Dust Collection
The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) a body that governs and issues standards on combustible dust issues, has published several standards for regulation and management of fires, flash fires and explosions resulting out of combustible dust. Your plant maintenance and EHS team needs to be aware of these standards while working around industrial ventilation and combustible dust. The NFPA Standards routinely associated with industrial dust collection systems are as follows:- NFPA 61 - Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Processing Facilities. It mostly covers processes of handling agricultural dusts, and related equipment like bucket elevators, silos etc
- NFPA 68 – Standard on Explosion Protection by Deflagration Venting. Applies to methods of explosion venting in dust collectors and bag filters.
- NFPA 69 – Standard on Explosion Prevention Systems. Serves as a guideline to design engineers, operating personnel, and AHJ ( Authority Having Jurisdiction) for design and consideration in designing the dust extraction systems for any facility.
- NFPA 484 – Standard for Combustible Metals. Applies to facilities processing metals and metal alloys.
- NFPA 655 – Standard for Prevention of Sulfur Fires and Explosions
- NFPA 652 – Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust. Most basic yet important standard for anyone working with combustible dust. The standard mandates the completion of a dust hazard analysis (DHA) for existing processes and facility compartments where combustible dust may be present and also places responsibility on owners and plant managers for the overall handling and mitigation of hazards related to combustible dust.
- NFPA 654 – Standard for the Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosions from the Manufacturing, Processing, and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids
- NFPA 664 – Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facility
- NFPA 77 - Standard for dusts with Static Electricity properties.
